What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization for Business Sites
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website content so AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews can find it, understand it, and cite it when they answer someone's question. Classic SEO competes for a position on a results page; AEO competes for a mention inside the answer itself. For a business site, the work comes down to three things: direct answers near the top of every page, clean structure a machine can parse, and trust signals that make you worth citing.
What does answer engine optimization actually mean?
When a potential client asks ChatGPT "should I build my site on Webflow or WordPress?", the engine does not return ten blue links. It composes one answer and cites a handful of sources. Answer engine optimization is everything you do to be one of those sources.
In practice, AEO is not a separate discipline from SEO. The same crawlable, well-structured, genuinely helpful page that ranks in Google tends to be the page AI engines quote. What changes is the target: instead of chasing a position, you write content that answers one specific question so clearly that an engine can lift it, attribute it, and move on. I covered the search side of this in Is Webflow Good for SEO?; AEO is the next layer on top of that foundation.
You will also see the term GEO (generative engine optimization). In day-to-day work, the two describe the same job.
How is AEO different from classic SEO?
The difference is easiest to see side by side. SEO wins you the click; AEO wins you the mention. And unlike a results page, an AI answer has no page two: if you are not cited, you are invisible for that question.
What I see agencies get wrong is treating these as competing budgets. They are the same work with a sharper editorial standard: the pages that earn AI citations are usually the pages that were already ranking well, rewritten to answer faster.
How many people already use answer engines?
This is the part I show clients who think AI search is hype. These numbers come from the platforms themselves, not from industry guesses:
- Google's AI Overviews now reach over 2.5 billion users every month, according to Alphabet's June 2026 investor presentation.
- AI Mode, Google's conversational search experience, passed 1 billion monthly users about a year after launch, per the same presentation.
- ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users as of February 2026, according to OpenAI.
The conclusion for a business site is simple: a meaningful share of your future clients now get their first answer from an AI engine, and the sources those engines cite are chosen before anyone ever sees a results page.
How do I optimize a business site for answer engines?
Here is the checklist I apply on client builds. None of it is exotic; most of it is regularly skipped.
- Answer first, explain second. Open every important page and post with a 2-3 sentence direct answer to the question the page targets. An engine can only quote what stands on its own, and an opening that answers directly is the easiest thing for it to lift.
- Use question-style headings. H2s that mirror how people actually ask ("How much does X cost?", "Is X good for Y?") give engines clean entry points into your content.
- Keep paragraphs short and self-contained. A paragraph that only makes sense in context is hard to quote. Two to four sentences that stand alone are easy to quote.
- Add FAQ content for long-tail questions. Each question-answer pair is a ready-made citation for a specific query.
- Mark up the page with schema. More on this below.
- Say who wrote it and why they are credible. A named author with real experience beats an anonymous marketing page for trust signals.
Does schema markup matter for AEO?
Yes, and it is the most mechanical win on the list. Structured data describes your content in a machine-readable format, and Google's structured data case studies show why it is worth the effort: Nestle measured an 82% higher click-through rate on pages appearing as rich results, and Rotten Tomatoes saw a 25% higher click-through rate on pages with structured data.
If your site runs on Webflow, this is easier than it used to be: Webflow has a native schema markup field in page settings, with AI-assisted generation, on paid site plans. I walked through the full setup in How to Add Schema Markup (JSON-LD) to a Webflow Site.
Where should you start?
Pick the five questions clients ask you most often before they buy. Write or rewrite one page for each, with the direct answer in the first three sentences, a question-style heading structure, and Article or FAQ schema. Then ask ChatGPT and Gemini those same questions a few weeks later and see who gets cited. That loop, repeated, is the whole practice.
If you would rather have this handled inside your Webflow build, this is part of how I structure every site I deliver for agencies and clients. Reach out if you want a quote or a second opinion on your current setup.
FAQ
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. AI engines still rely on crawling, indexing, and trust signals, so a page that ranks well is more likely to be cited. Treat AEO as an extra layer on top of solid SEO fundamentals, not a substitute for them.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They largely describe the same practice. GEO (generative engine optimization) usually emphasizes LLM chatbots like ChatGPT, while AEO also covers answer features like Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets. The day-to-day tactics overlap almost completely: direct answers, clear structure, and verifiable sourcing.
Does schema markup help with AEO?
Yes. Schema markup (structured data) describes your content in a machine-readable format, which helps both search engines and AI systems understand what a page is about. Google's own case studies link structured data to significantly higher click-through rates on rich results.
How do I know if AI engines are citing my site?
Check your analytics for referral traffic from domains like chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, and perplexity.ai, and ask the engines your key customer questions to see which sources they cite. Several SEO platforms now offer AI citation tracking as well.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Expect a similar timeline to SEO: usually weeks to a few months, depending on your site's existing authority and how competitive the question is. Newer or low-authority sites take longer, because engines tend to lean on sources that already show trust signals.
Is Webflow good for AEO?
Yes. Webflow outputs clean semantic HTML, gives you full control over headings and metadata, and includes a native schema markup field in page settings on paid site plans. None of that guarantees citations, but it removes the technical blockers that hold many platforms back.
